Lessons Learned
Some Taught-Some Caught
Day #38
June 2nd, 2013
Team Zybko
I do miss some aspects of real school. The cute end of the year review photo books of each kid are tops on the list. In the past we have had super creative, caring teachers who have taken the time to document the history of 180 days spent learning inside and outside the cinder block walls.
If I had it together like them, I would have done this through out the year, little by little, one fun field trip and lesson at at time.
I did the photo part but not quite the keeping organized book part.
Strolling down memory lane took way longer than expected, once I started I found it hard to stop. Kinda like the lesson on inertia when I pushed the kids down the ski slope in a stroller.
An object in motion tends to stay in motion.
I did find myself smiling at the days gone by as I trudged through the folders labeled Minnesota. The five months spent in the middle of nowhere seemed to be a crash course on life, more so than workbook pages crossed of a mandatory teachers agenda. We learned by living, I know us parents do this everyday whether we officially home school or not.
One of the many perks of home schooling, as the teacher I am able to smash and mold many of these experiences as lessons taught, slowly adding up to the necessary amount of days required by law. I too had a full year of growing. I had no idea what God had in store for me when he plunked us in cold, yet beautiful Northern Minnesota.
On a Pass/Fail scale I'd give myself a P-.
I am truly thankful for the year behind us, completing home school year #2 with many lessons caught not taught. We were heavy on the science, PE and history subjects. It was impossible not to take advantage of our surroundings. We did continue our course of study upon returning to SC but the kids are eating cereal for the second meal in a row so no more picture searching.
Time to get my rump up out of this chair.
