I wasn't even 8 years old when this song was released, pretty sure I didn't even know what it was about. The only thing I remember from the 1979 single are a few words of the chorus and the overwhelming good feeling connected to hearing it.
Ya see, my older sister was a life guard, 7 years older than me and cool as the other side of the pillow. During the summer I was her side kick, mini shadow and her favorite little sister.....by default. Four awesome brothers separate our birth order but not my admiration for her.

I was delighted to tag along. To jump in the car, to ride with her, to various community pools, just the two of us. An unofficial co- worker and assistant who naively cleaned the scum line just to stay in the pool during adult swim. The best season of the year, a 3 month non-stop dream season. The hot, sunny season spent living in my bathing suit, carefree, smiling from ear to ear. My pay was simple. No money, just fortunate beyond measure to spend time with her was all the paycheck I needed.

Not quite sure of the real story, if my mom made her take me or if it was her choice, who cares at this point. I had the time of my life, all before I turned ten. Coke Slurpees from 7-11, happily cleaning toilets to pull my weight, playing crazy eights til my fingers were numb and frozen Charleston Chews as a sweet treat.
Special time with my big sister as the radio played this song every 30 minutes clear as a bell, despite a broken silver antenna wrapped in tape from the first aid kit. Singing on key was not important.

These good times are the reason I don't mind
getting caught in the rain
35 years later the song is brought back to life when dark storm clouds come out of nowhere while at a park with the two littles. Appreciating the change of weather as it brings back a flood of memories. Instead of running for cover, I relish the fresh raindrops from above. They always seem to freshen my spirit with a wet dose memories. Every puddle full of love and a reminder to live each day with a childlike mentality.
