Flying Kites With Kids
A Test in Parent Patience
Day 331
April 1, 2014
Team Zybko

Gale force winds and straight up heavenly sunshine called us to the park by name this weekend. What a beautiful day. The kind of day you want to bottle up and save, to use at a later date, like say next January when it's 20 degrees, grey and sleeting. Yep, for sure I would hide it right next to my stash of extra coffee and favorite Nikes, hidden in the back of my closet, covered only by my vintage sweatshirt from 1985.

Since that simply isn't possible, we decided to use it all up in a few fun filled hours. Gorging ourselves as we enjoyed every gust of warm air beneath our "wings" and colorful flimsy dollar store kites.

Flying kites with children will surely test even the one with the patience of Job. The only thing I can assume is that he never had to deal with cheap kites, over stimulated children and 40 mile an hour winds back in the Old Testament times. HA!

The ups and downs, highs and lows of kite flying sets us parental units up for a final exam type lesson on deep breathing and patience. Please get your #2 pencil and scantron sheet ready, time starts now. Free Starbucks for those who earn a solid "A".  Please be aware, no grading on a curve in this classroom of life, so give it all you got.

The multicolored spring grass was littered with parents desiring to spend quality with their children. Lots of entertainment and activity for the nosy type of busy body southerner.
Ahem, cough cough.

So, in order to capture moments of love from total strangers I have mastered my eaves dropping, zooming in and people watching skills. I'm telling you this folks, it is harder than it looks, so don't try it at home any time soon. If I hadn't already looked creepy enough I would have suggested we all go grab a grande latte, on me, extra whip and extra hot. Please and thank you.

They were tender, loving and 110 percent patient with their offspring the entire park visit. Kites went up, kites went down, kites were dragged on the ground in childlike frustration with occasional big fat crocodile tears in between. Despite the amateur students behind the plastic rolls of string these parents continued to smile and forge on.  Lovingly correcting their students over and over and over again.....and over and over again. Super refreshing and necessary for this soccer mom to see. Wonderful examples complimented nicely with the sight of new pink blooms of every shade on nearby trees.
Lessons learned by all on this blustery day.
Note to self: save for a better quality kite.
Until then, fly on with patience.

Better a patient person than a warrior,
one with self-control than one who takes a city.
