Our Asphalt Beach
Day 328
March 28, 2014
Team Zybko

No soft dry sand between our toes
No salty water to stiffen our hair
No unique shells or sharks teeth to find
No seagulls threatening to poop on our head or steal our snacks
No ice cold canned sodas or treats loaded down with trans fat
No boogie boarding personal bests
No clumpy sand castle remnants getting stuck in hidden body cracks
No hold hands and jump over the incoming tide games

No REAL beach in sight. Our move has landed us farther from our favorite day get away of North Myrtle Beach but in our imagination it is closer than ever. Instead of complaining I choose to be creative.

Everyday with out fail I am truly excited to see 2:00pm roll over on my cracked iPhone. With a childlike ferver I eagerly look forward to the 45 minute downtime and necessary recess. Our post home school reward and pre pick up Delaney break...yes...let's load up guys and head out the door.

The cheesy gold van conveniently and faithfully stores a party in a car, packed up for fun as we head to our hidden spot a mere 10 minutes from the house. Nothing fancy, no play ground equipment, gas stations, trails or others moms and kids to mingle with. Just a bunch of aging asphalt. This huge stadium parking lot is abandoned, no longer used by the baseball team, home field for no one in particular. Besides the occasional lunch break worker fleeing free from a surrounding business the many acres is absent of people. The vast emptiness is bliss, allowing us the freedom to do whatever we wish. Ride bikes, run, Nerf battles, play soccer, boomerangs, jumprope, side walk chalk art, practice old Zumba songs or run around naked. (Just seeing if you were paying attention) Soccer moms gone wild.

Today, after goofing around we went to the beach. The air and sun felt HOT compared to the long stretch of many nasty wintery type days. Wonderful. The warmth of this spring afternoon was well accepted, the natural dose of vitamin D was simply lovely.

We lathered up with SPF and smelled the part. Copper sun equals real life beach aroma. We searched for treasures. We found bottle tops and Dandy Lions. We closed our eyes and heard the ocean. Interstate 77 roared close by with fast cars and trucks. We watched the circling buzzards overhead. They are the new seagull this season just a tad creepier. Barefoot toes hopped over empty parking spaces. No burning or blistering here as we packed up our short beach trip.

Car lined called us away, I hope to stay longer next time. Thank you Lord for this unexpected field trip to the beach. Load up guys, let's go get some board walk ice cream!
